Safer, More Dignified Changing for Every Facility

For many teens and adults living with disabilities, a trip to the restroom or a routine change comes with a hard question: where can it happen safely? Without the right equipment, caregivers end up lifting and bending over beds, floors, or undersized surfaces. That puts both people at risk. An adult changing table gives the person being changed a stable, comfortable surface. It also gives caregivers a working height that protects their backs.

At Patient Safety USA, we've spent more than thirty years in the medical device field, and we're a distributor for Pressalit®. This page gathers our adult changing tables in one place so you can compare styles, learn what to look for, and move on to the model that fits your space.

What Is an Adult Changing Table?

An adult changing table, also called a nursing table or nursing bench, is a platform built to support a grown person's full body weight during personal care. It's longer, wider, and much sturdier than a baby changing station. Many models also raise and lower electrically, so the caregiver can work at a comfortable height and then lower the table for a safer transfer.

People use these tables for many daily care tasks. Families and facilities often search for an adult diaper changing table when they're planning for incontinence care. These tables also help with dressing, hygiene routines, and transfers. Some models double as shower tables, so bathing and changing can happen in the same place.

Who Uses an Adult Size Changing Table?

An adult-size changing table belongs anywhere people with limited mobility receive care. Our customers include:

  • Hospitals and rehabilitation hospitals
  • Nursing homes and assisted living facilities
  • Schools that support students with special needs
  • Public restrooms and universal changing rooms
  • Home care settings where family members provide daily support

In each of these settings, the goal is the same: limit the risk of injury to the person receiving care and to the staff or family member giving it.

Types of Adult Changing Stations

No two rooms are alike, so adult changing stations come in several formats. Here are the main styles in our lineup:

  • Height-adjustable tables: electric controls raise and lower the surface, so caregivers of different heights can work comfortably, and transfers can happen at a safer level.
  • Fixed height tables: a simpler option for spaces where the same staff use the table and adjustment isn't needed.
  • Wall-mounted, foldable tables: these fold against the wall when not in use, which saves floor space in restrooms and care rooms.
  • Mobile shower change trolleys: changing and showering tables on wheels that move between rooms.
  • Recessed stainless steel stations: built into the wall for a low profile finish in public or high traffic spaces.

Wall Mounted Changing Tables for Adults

A wall-mounted changing table for adults is often the best fit when floor space is tight. Take the Pressalit® SCT 1000 as an example. It folds up with built-in gas cylinders when not in use. The electric version adjusts from 18.9" to 34.7" with a wired hand control, and it supports a maximum load of 150 kg. It comes in 55.1" and 70.9" lengths, and a safety rail lock is included.

For public washrooms, the Ascent® Universal Changing Table (70" length) is built to make public restrooms more inclusive. It supports up to 500 lbs, adjusts electrically from 16" to 39", and folds to just 9.5" deep. It's IPX6 rated for safe cleaning, so it holds up to frequent washdowns.

Choosing a Changing Table for Adults with Disabilities

When you compare options for a changing table for adults with disabilities, start with the people who'll use it and the room it'll live in. Key questions include:

  • Weight capacity: does the table's maximum load comfortably cover your users?
  • Height range: how low does it go for transfers, and how high for caregiver comfort?
  • Length and width: will the user's full body fit with room to spare?
  • Footprint: does the space call for a folding, wall-mounted, recessed, or mobile design?
  • Cleaning: how easy is it to sanitize between uses?
  • Safety features: are side rails, rail locks, and clearly marked controls included?

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between an adult changing table and a baby changing station?

An adult changing table is longer, wider, and built to carry a grown person's full weight. Many models also raise and lower electrically for safer transfers.

Can an adult changing table fold away when it isn't in use?

Yes. Several of our wall-mounted models fold against the wall, including the SCT 1000, CT 4100, and Ascent® Universal Changing Table.

Is a height-adjustable or fixed-height table better?

Height-adjustable tables suit spaces with many caregivers or frequent transfers. Fixed-height tables work well when the same staff uses the table and the space is consistent. Our adult changing table FAQ covers more common questions.
