Height-Adjustable Tables and Counters

Adjustable Countertops, Tables & Countertop Lifts

A kitchen should work for every person who uses it. An adjustable countertop brings the work surface to the user, so a resident in a wheelchair, a caregiver standing at the counter, and a student at a classroom cooking station can all share one surface at a comfortable height. The Patient Safety USA Adjustable Tables & Counters collection brings together countertop lifts, wall cabinet lifts, complete lift packs, and the safety and control accessories that support them, for nursing homes, hospitals, rehabilitation hospitals, assisted living facilities, schools, and private homes.

Why Choose a Height Adjustable Countertop?

A fixed counter is built for one working height, and that height rarely suits a seated user, a tall caregiver, and a child at the same time. A height adjustable countertop moves up and down electrically at the press of a button, so the same surface can serve seated and standing users throughout the day.

For care facilities and homes, that flexibility supports:

  • Independence: seated users can prepare meals, wash dishes, and work at the counter without waiting for help.
  • Safer caregiving: staff can set the surface at a comfortable working height instead of bending or reaching over a fixed counter.
  • Shared kitchens that serve more people: one adjustable kitchen countertop can work for residents, therapy patients, family members, and staff.
  • Room to adapt: as a user's needs change, the counter height can change with them.

Inside the Adjustable Tables & Counters Collection

This collection covers each part of an adjustable kitchen, from the countertop to the cabinets above it.

Countertop Lifts

Wall-mounted countertop lifts raise and lower an entire work surface electrically. Models are offered with a maximum load of 220 lbs or 330 lbs, including the countertop, in five length ranges from 23.6 to 118.1 inches. That range lets you match a countertop lift to a compact prep station or a full kitchen run.

Indivo Packs

Indivo Pack lifts bring the components of an adjustable height countertop together in one kit: lifting columns, a cross brace with an adhesive safety strip, a cable tray, an electrical component kit, and worktop and fascia mounting brackets. Packs come in small, medium, and large sizes for worktops from about 23.6 to 123 inches long, with an adjustable height range of about 26 to 37 inches. Packs with two legs support up to 220 lbs, and packs with three legs support up to 330 lbs for larger setups that need extra stability. Visit our Indivo Packs page for the full size chart.

Wall Cabinet Lifts

Upper cabinets are often the hardest part of a kitchen to reach from a seated position. Wall cabinet lifts lower a cabinet up to 16.9 inches using switches or a wired remote control, and the cabinet moves 7.1 inches toward the user as it comes down. They carry up to 240 lbs, including the cabinet, and fit cabinet widths from 15.7 to 94.5 inches across two sizes.

Safety and Control Accessories

Accessories help you fit and finish each installation:

  • Safety rails and safety bars that stop the countertop's downward movement when resistance is felt
  • Safety plates for use beneath wall cabinets
  • Fascia switches in circular and oval styles, plus a wired remote control
  • Cable trays, extension fittings, mounting brackets, stabilizing feet, and crank handles

Safety is built into the system. Pressure-sensitive bars mount beneath the countertop, and safety plates fit beneath the cabinets; if either one is activated, movement stops and the lift backs off. That helps protect users and keeps items on the counter from being damaged.

Wheelchair Accessible Countertops and ADA Planning

An adjustable countertop is a practical way to create a wheelchair accessible countertop without setting aside a permanently lowered section of the kitchen. Lowered, the counter meets a seated user; raised, it works for standing staff and family members. Indivo lifts are designed to fit most cabinets and countertops, which gives you the option to retrofit an existing kitchen, and Indivo Packs adapt to different layouts and worktop materials, including setups with sinks or cooktops.

If your project must meet ADA requirements, counter height is one part of a larger plan that also covers knee clearance, reach ranges, and clear floor space. Our guide to height adjustable cabinets and countertops explores accessibility and independence in the kitchen in more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are adjustable countertops ADA compliant?

An adjustable countertop can be part of an ADA compliant kitchen, but compliance depends on the full design, including clearances, reach ranges, and installation. Confirm the requirements for your project with your architect or code official.

Can a countertop lift be added to an existing kitchen?

Often, yes. Indivo lifts are designed to fit most cabinets and countertops, and Indivo Packs include complete mounting hardware for adjustments on site.

How much weight can a height adjustable countertop hold?

It depends on the model. Countertop lifts and Indivo Packs come in 220 lb and 330 lb maximum load versions, and wall cabinet lifts carry up to 240 lbs, including the cabinet.
